What is Sexual Health?

Sexual Health refers to a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It encompasses various aspects of human sexuality, including sexual behaviors, relationships, reproductive health, and the ability to have pleasurable and safe sexual experiences.

We believe having good sexual health is an integral part of overall health and well-being throughout a person’s life.

Why arrange a sexual health screening?

You may want to arrange an STI screening for a number of reasons.

Some of these reasons may include being sexually active, especially if you have unprotected sex, if you are changing your sexual partner, or you have noticed symptoms that could be caused by an STI. You may also wish to arrange an STI screening if you are planning on getting pregnant and want to make sure you are healthy, or if you are having a procedure such as a contraceptive coil insertion and you want to be sure there is no risk from an infection.

All of these are valid reasons to arrange sexual health screening, and here at Jersey Women’s Health Hub, we can assist you with this.

What should I expect?

At an STI screening appointment, we will usually begin by asking some questions about your sexual health and history.

Depending on your circumstances, we will then recommend which STI tests are appropriate. For example: chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, syphilis and/or HIV. The samples that we will need to take depend on which infections you are at risk of, and whether you’ve had any symptoms.

What happens next?

After your sexual health screening, we will provide you with the results of your STI test as soon as possible.

Once you have them, if no infections were found, no further action is needed. However, you should continue to practise safe sex using a condom.

If a problem is identified we will provide the treatment you need, which is usually a course of antibiotics. You should avoid having sex until the treatment is complete. We may recommend additional tests or treatment if there have been any complications.

You should inform your current or past sexual partners of the diagnosis so that they can also get tested and treated.
